Proper and Effective Autism Treatment Processes

Autism is a disorder in which there is an impaired ability to have social communication and interaction, and restricted, repetitive behaviours. It affects feelings, behaviours, abilities and thoughts. Autism does not affect intelligence or self-awareness.

Autism treatment in Singapore includes behavioural therapy for the individual or family with autism as well as medication that may be prescribed by a doctor to treat symptoms of autism. There are many different treatment options available today for those with this disorder. Treatment can also occur in hospitals to help individuals with autism who find it difficult to interact socially or behave in a more typically appropriate manner. Behavioural therapy will teach skills that individuals with autism need such as how to communicate verbally, how to socialise appropriately and how things work around them.

Social workers are also available to help families cope with living with and raising children that have autism. A child or adult diagnosed with autism will experience symptoms differently in intensity and frequency. Therefore, the treatment options and therapy plans should be modified to fit the person’s needs.

There are a number of things within hospitals that help those with autism get better care and make it easier for them to treat their symptoms. Some of these include:

1- Intake:

The intake process involves an evaluation of what types of treatments or therapies would best suit an individual with autism and their family members’ needs. This initial evaluation can take place in a hospital or counselling centre. The treatment team will include many people, including a doctor or psychiatrist, a psychologist, a speech therapist, and others. They will evaluate the patient’s living situation, schooling situation, and nutrition. The treatment team will also sit down with family members to get their input as well as the patient’s point of view.

2- Assessment:

Once the intake process is completed, then an assessment of autism can be done by testing such things as mental capacity and social skills using specific assessments that are designed for autistic people. These assessments usually consist of an interview, a test of the patient’s communication and language skills, as well as a clinical evaluation of their development and behaviour. These assessments will help the treatment team to develop an individualised plan for their patient.

3- Prescription medication:

There are many prescription medications that have been found to be effective in treating autism. Some of these medications include antipsychotic drugs, antidepressants and stimulants (i.e.: Ritalin). Antipsychotic medications which are used in treating schizophrenia can also be used to treat behavioural issues such as inappropriate behaviour or aggression. It is recommended that the patient take these medications in conjunction with some form of behaviour modification program.

4- Therapy Treatments:

There are many types of therapy treatments that can help a person with autism. A few of these include speech therapy, occupational therapy, and social skills training. In speech therapy, the patient will work with a trained specialist to improve their communication skills. This can usually be done one on one with a therapist or in a classroom setting where the patient will work on speaking and listening skills in a less structured environment. Social skills training involves teaching things such as appropriate social behaviours and how to interact with other people. This may involve role play and games to help teach self-help, problem-solving and social interaction skills.

5- Outcome/ Reflection:

After the therapy treatment is complete, then the patient will be evaluated to see how much improvement has been made. The treatment team will usually recommend ways for family members to continue with the treatment at home. They will also provide recommendations for the next steps in the treatment process.

Treatment of Autism is not easy and there are no guarantees that it will get any easier. But with the right therapy, it can be possible to help this condition. Treatment can be carried out in a hospital or at home depending on where the patient lives. There are many different types of therapy that can be used in treatment. This includes speech therapy, social skills training, and even education. It is important to know that all treatment is not the same and is based on the needs of each individual.
